How to Measure Your Studio with Room EQ Wizard
When bass disappears at the listening position and comes roaring back a few feet away, the room—not the speaker—may be responsible. This guide explains how to make repeatable measurements with Room EQ Wizard and use them to improve placement and treatment.
Prepare the measurement system
Use a measurement microphone with the appropriate calibration file, a compatible interface, and playback levels that are safe for both hearing and speakers. Follow Room EQ Wizard’s documentation for routing, calibration and sweep settings.
Measure each speaker independently
Start at the listening position with one loudspeaker playing at a time. Record microphone height, orientation and gain. Make additional measurements at nearby positions; one point in a room rarely tells the entire story.
Read the graph in context
Inspect frequency response, decay and timing. A deep cancellation null often cannot be repaired by adding more EQ. Try moving the source or listener, addressing reflections or adding suitable bass treatment before designing filters.
Compare changes properly
Keep sweep level and measurement settings consistent, give files meaningful names, and evaluate differences across several locations. A calibration file for frequency response does not automatically provide an absolute SPL calibration.
Repeatable measurement checklist
Use the calibration file for the specific measurement microphone and verify the required orientation. Disable correction filters when measuring an untreated baseline, unless you are deliberately measuring the entire corrected system. Measure left, right and subwoofer separately before combined measurements. Save the microphone location, sweep range, gain and sample rate. Compare nearby points rather than relying on a single measurement. See room modes.
