SSL Introduces ORIGIN EVO Analogue Console

By admin ·

Solid State Logic has introduced ORIGIN EVO, a new all-analogue in-line console that builds substantially on the original ORIGIN platform while moving the channel architecture closer to the classic 4000 E concept.

The most consequential change is the channel strip. Every ORIGIN EVO channel combines SSL’s PureDrive mic preamp, the E Series 242 “Black Knob” four-band EQ, high- and low-pass filters, and a full recreation of the E Series compressor/limiter and expander/gate. The original ORIGIN provided a deliberately simpler channel path; EVO is a considerably more complete analogue console at the channel level.

ORIGIN EVO is available in 16- and 32-channel in-line configurations, with large and small faders and up to 88 inputs at mixdown. SSL has also revised the centre section and bus compressor. The latter adds additional ratios, a sidechain high-pass filter and an insert return. The modular 19-inch centre section can accommodate SSL UF8 or UF1 DAW controllers or other rack-format hardware.

Of particular interest to existing ORIGIN owners, SSL says the new channel strips can be retrofitted to earlier consoles in eight-channel upgrade kits. That sounds straightforward until the economics of converting a 32-channel ORIGIN are examined; TAM will look at that upgrade path separately.
