Audio-Technica Introduces ATH-AWX7000 Flagship Closed-Back Headphones

By Richard Alan Salz ·

Audio-Technica has introduced the ATH-AWX7000, a new flagship closed-back headphone designed and manufactured in Japan. It is the company’s first model to use its True Closed-back Acoustic design, which Audio-Technica says manages the pressure inside the sealed earcups to retain closed-back bass extension and dynamic range while improving mid- and high-frequency transparency.

The 58 mm drivers combine two new manufacturing approaches. A Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm bonds polymer film to a metal dome so the assembly moves as one unit, while the company’s High-Concentricity X Dynamic Transducer process aligns the baffle, magnet, voice coil and diaphragm more tightly. Audio-Technica claims manufacturing tolerances are reduced to one-tenth of its conventional level.

The housings are made from Kiso cypress and finished by hand with Echizen lacquer. The frame and arms are magnesium, the sliders are machined aluminium, and the earpads and headband use Japanese deerskin. Published specifications include a 5 Hz–50 kHz frequency range, 48-ohm impedance, 97 dB/mW sensitivity and an approximate weight of 353 g without cable.

A 2.5 m balanced cable with a four-pin Neutrik XLR connector, a 3 m unbalanced cable with a 6.3 mm plug and a carrying case are included. Audio-Technica lists the ATH-AWX7000 at an official price of $3,799 USD.
