VCV Rack 2 Free recreates a modular-synthesizer workflow using connected virtual modules. Oscillators, filters, sequencers and control-voltage utilities can be combined into playable patches. It is useful for learning modular synthesis and developing generative or performance-oriented instruments. The free edition is a standalone application; the commercial Pro edition adds capabilities including DAW plug-in use.
For a reusable production setup, save the patch with the session and note any external content it depends on. This makes it easier to reopen the arrangement on another machine.
Rack Free is standalone; the DAW plug-in is part of Rack Pro. Optional third-party modules may be paid.
