Audacity

Audacity combines waveform editing with multitrack recording, effects processing and file conversion. It is useful for assembling interviews, trimming location recordings, preparing samples and making straightforward music edits. Tracks can be cut, faded and balanced before exporting a delivery file; its editing workflow is different from a MIDI-centered production workstation.

Keep an untouched source file when making destructive edits or conversions. Check the exported audio as well as the project, particularly when the destination requires a specific sample rate or bit depth.
